History
A group of believers has been worshiping on the property where Northside Independent Methodist Church is located near the intersection of Mt. Vernon Hwy. and Glenridge Drive since 1878. Before a church was established, brush arbor meetings were held here where believers from all over the Atlanta area came to worship. Sandy Springs became a central location for these meetings.
In 1965 nine people met to discuss the possibility of forming a church. In 1966 the church was chartered as a Methodist Church in the Southern Methodist Conference with nearly thirty members. In 1971 the church voted to become an Independent Methodist Church. In December of 1972 the Board of Trustees purchased the present facilities. In 1979 the Church installed the beautiful stained glass windows. In 1980 at Christmas the carillons were installed, providing lovely bells on Sunday morning summoning worshipers in the Sandy Springs community to services. In 1988 the congregation retired the mortgage on the current facility and has been continually making improvements and updates to the sanctuary, the education building, which includes church offices, and the grounds. An elevator was installed in the rear of the sanctuary to provide handicap accessibility to the services. Northside is listed as one of the Historic Homes and Churches of Sandy Springs.
